5 Must-Have Photos for Your Raleigh Newborn Session

The newborn stage is one of the shortest seasons you’ll ever experience as a parent, and somehow it always passes faster than expected.

One minute they’re tiny and curled up on your chest, and the next they’re outgrowing newborn clothes and you’re wondering where the time went. A dad once told me, three years after his newborn session, that he still has one photo on his phone and pulls it up all the time. I love hearing things like that because it’s a good reminder that certain newborn photos just hold up differently than others.

Here are the five must-have photos for your Raleigh newborn session that capture all the love, sweetness, and joy of this season.

I’m participating in a blog circle this month and sharing the work of a talented photographer in Virginia. Be sure to check out her post linked at the end of this blog!

Baby Alone

There’s nothing quite like a solo shot of your baby to remind you just how little they once were. Those tiny fingers, those squishy toes, those eyelashes they somehow already have — every little detail deserves to be documented. I love getting a variety of these shots so we capture your baby from every angle, because I promise you’ll want them all from your Raleigh newborn session.

A few years from now, you’ll look at these photos and feel like you’re right back in those early newborn days. I love capturing these in the crib or on the bed — somewhere that feels like home, because that’s exactly what a Raleigh newborn session should feel like.

Mom with Baby

Those first few weeks of snuggling your baby are something else entirely. You’ve been waiting and preparing and imagining this for months, and now here they are — actually here, actually yours, actually sleeping on your chest. Your Raleigh newborn session is where we freeze that moment

I want to be really honest about something, because I hear this more than you might think: so many moms almost skip getting in the photos. They don’t feel like themselves yet. They’re exhausted, they’re postpartum, and the last thing they want is a camera pointed at them. I had a mom recently who told me right before her session that she was planning to just stay behind the camera. I gently encouraged her to join in — and by the end, she was texting me saying those ended up being her absolute favorite photos from the whole gallery. The ones she almost didn’t take.

You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.

I love capturing these in the nursery chair or swaying by the crib — somewhere natural and quiet where that mama-and-baby bond just radiates.

Dad with Baby

There is something about watching a new dad hold his baby that never gets old. That moment when his big hands are cradling this tiny person he helped create, and he just looks down at them with this expression that’s somewhere between total awe and complete disbelief — I live for that shot.

Dads are sometimes a little hesitant in front of the camera, but the second that baby is in their arms, they forget I’m even there. That’s exactly when I get the best photos. Whether it’s a quiet moment on the bed, standing by the nursery window, or just sitting on the floor with the baby on his chest, these are some of my favorite photos from any Raleigh newborn session.

The Full Family

There is nothing like the moment your family becomes complete. Whether this is your first baby or your third, something shifts the day you bring a new little one home — and it’s worth capturing exactly as it is, messy and tender and real.

The quiet glances between you and your partner, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the way you instinctively pull your baby closer — these are the moments that make up the first chapter of your life as this particular family. I love photographing these on the bed or sofa where everyone naturally gathers, because that’s where the real moments from your Raleigh newborn session happen.

Siblings with Baby

If you have older kids, these photos might end up being some of your favorites from the whole session. There’s something about watching a big brother or sister meet the baby — or settle into the idea of them — that is just so genuine and sweet.

I’ll be honest, not every sibling walks in ready to cooperate — and that’s completely normal. I had one little one who was totally unsure about the whole situation, arms crossed, not buying it. So we tried a little trick — we tucked a few marshmallows into the baby’s swaddle and told the big kid there was something hidden in there. Within about thirty seconds, that child was nose-to-nose with the baby, completely invested, and we got the most genuine, giggly sibling shot of the whole session. Sometimes the best photos come from the most unexpected moments.

Whether your older child is completely smitten or still warming up, I’ve got tricks to make it work — and your Raleigh newborn session photos will be worth it every time.

Pets with Baby

They were your first babies. They were there through the pregnancy, the late nights, the anticipation — and now they’re meeting the newest and tiniest member of the family. Including your pets in your newborn session isn’t just adorable, it’s a real part of your family’s story.

Whether your dog is gently sniffing the baby’s toes or your cat is curiously peeking into the bassinet, these moments bring so much warmth and personality to your gallery. Pets have a way of making a home feel like a home in photos — and they absolutely deserve a spot in your Raleigh newborn session gallery.

These Are the Photos You’ll Keep Coming Back To
