If you’ve been thinking about Raleigh maternity and newborn photos but weren’t sure whether to plan them together or figure it out later, this post is for you.
There’s a moment – usually sometime in the third trimester – when it hits you that this is actually happening. The nursery is coming together, the due date is circled on the calendar, and somewhere in the middle of all that preparation, you realize you want to remember this. Not just the newborn days, but this part too. The waiting, the growing, the becoming. Planning both sessions during pregnancy allows them to feel connected from the beginning, while taking one more decision off your plate once your baby arrives.
Maternity and newborn photos don’t have to feel like two separate things you check off a list. When they’re planned together with intention, they become two chapters of the same story – your story. The pregnancy that changed everything, and then the first days with the person you were waiting for.
As a Raleigh maternity and newborn photographer, that’s the experience I want every family to have with Lindsey Lambert Photography. I want families to look back at both galleries and feel the thread running through them. The same warmth, the same closeness, the same sense of care. Not a maternity session that feels like one aesthetic and a newborn session that feels like a completely different one, but a collection of images that belong together.
That kind of cohesion starts with planning ahead – wardrobe, locations, overall style – before you’re deep in the newborn stage and making decisions on very little sleep.

Here’s something families don’t always think about until it’s too late: the newborn stage moves fast. Faster than most people expect. And if you wait until after your baby arrives to start looking for a photographer, a few things can happen.
Planning your Raleigh maternity and newborn photos during pregnancy takes so much off your plate. We can talk through timing, wardrobe, locations, and the overall look and feel you want while you still have the mental space to think it through. Then when your baby arrives, you’re not scrambling. You’re just settling in.
When you’re planning Raleigh maternity and newborn photos together, booking early gives us more time to make both sessions feel intentional and connected. I recommend scheduling your maternity session around 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy. That timing tends to feel comfortable for most people and gives you a beautiful window to document your bump while also leaving space for life to shift if it needs to.
For your newborn session, I encourage you to reserve your spot during pregnancy rather than waiting until after your baby is born. Due dates are unpredictable, and that’s okay. We can plan ahead for everything we can control and then finalize the session date once your baby arrives. There’s no rigid appointment to brace against – just a plan we’ve already made together.
One of the things I love about planning Raleigh maternity and newborn photos together is creating a cohesive look between the two sessions. That doesn’t mean matching. It means complementary. Similar tones, textures, and an overall feeling between what you wear to your maternity session and what’s chosen for your newborn session. I love imagery that feels warm, natural, and timeless, and that guides how I help families think through these choices.
We work through wardrobe together ahead of time, so you’re not staring at your closet two days before your session wondering what to wear. I provide personalized wardrobe guidance, with access to pieces from my client wardrobe when appropriate, so we can create a look that feels effortless, flattering, and cohesive with the rest of your session.
This is less about replicating images and more about honoring the same feeling across both sessions. Connection-focused, unhurried, emotionally present. The maternity session captures who you are on the edge of becoming a parent. The newborn session captures the beginning of that next chapter. When both sessions are guided by the same approach, the images belong together naturally.
When families book Raleigh maternity and newborn photos with Lindsey Lambert Photography, my goal is to take as much of the planning off the parents as possible. You don’t need to come to either session with everything figured out. I’ll guide you through the details, from timing and wardrobe to location, pacing, and the overall feel of your sessions, so when the day arrives, you can simply show up and be present with your family.

One thing expecting parents don’t always realize is just how quickly those first newborn days arrive. Waiting until after baby is born to start searching for a photographer can mean limited availability, fewer options, and one more decision to make while you’re adjusting to life with a newborn.
You don’t have to be there. Planning both sessions during pregnancy means you can actually enjoy them. The maternity session becomes a moment to pause and be present in your pregnancy. The newborn session becomes a soft landing in the middle of those first tender days – not one more thing to coordinate, but something that’s already been taken care of.
That’s what I want for every family I work with here in Raleigh.
