What to wear to a maternity photoshoot is something I think about from the other side of the camera every single session. And the honest answer is that figuring it out is less about finding the perfect outfit and more about understanding why certain choices photograph the way they do.
A client came in not long ago wearing something that by every technical measure was a reasonable choice for a maternity session. Neutral color, fitted, nothing wrong with it on paper. But within the first few frames I could tell something was off. The outfit was fine. It just was not her. It fit the checklist without fitting the person wearing it, and that gap showed up in the images in a way that is hard to put into words but impossible to miss through a camera lens.
We paused, I showed her a few pieces from the studio wardrobe, and she tried on a flowy chiffon maxi dress in a warm, muted neutral she would never have picked for herself at home. The difference was immediate. Her whole presence shifted. She stood differently, moved differently, and from that point forward the session had an ease to it that the first frames were missing.
That moment is why I put together this guide. Knowing what to wear to a maternity photoshoot is not just about following a list of rules. It is about understanding what actually works and why, so you can make choices that feel like you and photograph beautifully at the same time.
When I am behind the camera and an outfit for maternity photos is working, everything in the frame stops competing. The movement of the fabric draws the eye naturally. The color interacts with the light in a way that adds warmth and depth rather than distraction. And the client carries herself differently, more relaxed, more present, because she feels like herself.
That last part is the one most people do not expect. What to wear to a maternity photoshoot matters not just for how it looks on camera but for how it makes you feel. Confidence and comfort are not invisible. They show up in the way you hold your shoulders, the way your face settles between frames, the way the session breathes. The right outfit for maternity photos is one that lets you forget you are wearing it.
The wrong outfit does the opposite. You are adjusting, second-guessing, and aware of it the entire time. And that awareness is something no amount of editing can fully remove from an image.

When expecting moms ask me what to wear to a maternity photoshoot in terms of cut and shape, I keep coming back to four silhouettes that consistently deliver beautiful results.
Empire waist dresses. Fitted just below the bust and flowing from there, empire waist styles celebrate the bump without clinging across it. They move beautifully, they work on every body type, and they have a softness that translates incredibly well on camera.
Wrap styles. Wrap dresses and tops are adjustable by design, which means they work with your bump rather than against it. They create a defined shape at the waist and flow naturally from there. An outfit for maternity photos in a wrap style rarely misses.
Draped and gathered fabrics. Anything that falls over the bump rather than stretching across it tends to photograph with more dimension and elegance. Draped styles are also forgiving and comfortable, which matters more than most people think when you are spending an hour or more in a session.
Two piece sets. A fitted or cropped top paired with a flowy skirt or wide leg pant is one of my favorite outfit for maternity photos combinations. The top shows the bump clearly and intentionally while the bottom adds movement and a relaxed, modern feel. Two piece sets also give you more flexibility to mix textures and tones, which can add real visual interest to a gallery.
All four of these silhouettes share a common thread. They work with the shape of pregnancy rather than trying to minimize it. What to wear to a maternity photoshoot almost always comes down to that one principle.
The silhouette gets you most of the way there, but fabric is what takes an outfit for maternity photos from good to genuinely stunning. Here is what I consistently reach for and why.
When thinking about what to wear to a maternity photoshoot, fabric weight matters too. Heavier fabrics can feel suffocating during a session, especially in Raleigh’s warmer months. Lighter fabrics keep you comfortable and tend to move better on camera, which is a double win.

Color is one of the most asked-about parts of figuring out what to wear to a maternity photoshoot, and it is also one of the most straightforward once you understand a few basics.
Neutrals and muted tones are my consistent recommendation for an outfit for maternity photos. Ivory, cream, warm white, soft sage, dusty mauve, terracotta, camel, and warm taupe all photograph with real richness and warmth. They interact beautifully with natural light and do not compete with your skin tone or your surroundings.
Muted versions of deeper colors can also work well. A dusty rose reads very differently from a hot pink on camera. A muted navy reads very differently from a bright cobalt. The key is whether the color feels quiet or loud in the frame. Quiet almost always wins for maternity portrait work.
A brief note on what to steer away from: very dark colors and busy, competing patterns tend to flatten the shape of the bump and pull the eye in directions that work against the image. A simple pattern can be beautiful. Multiple patterns at once rarely are. When in doubt, solid and neutral is the most reliable choice for an outfit for maternity photos.
This is the part of what to wear to a maternity photoshoot that no checklist can fully cover, because it is different for every person.
The client I mentioned at the start of this post had a technically reasonable outfit. It just did not feel like her. That gap between what works on paper and what actually fits the person wearing it is something I see often, and it is why I always encourage clients to bring options and stay open to trying something they would not have chosen on their own.
My studio wardrobe exists for exactly this reason. There are pieces in it that clients would never think to search for online but reach for immediately once they see them in person. Soft, draped, textured, neutral. Things that photograph beautifully and feel like something rather than nothing. Wardrobe options are part of the planning conversation for every session, so you never arrive feeling like you have to figure it out alone.
What to wear to a maternity photoshoot is ultimately a question about how you want to feel. Elegant, relaxed, earthy, soft, modern. The right outfit for maternity photos is one that answers that question and lets everything else follow.

Before we wrap up, a few things that will make your outfit for maternity photos work even harder on the day of your session:
Trust the process. If you arrive and something is not working, say so. We will figure it out together. That is part of what the planning process and the studio wardrobe are there for.
Bring at least two options. Even if you are confident in your choice, having a backup means you have somewhere to go if something is not working the way you expected. Most clients end up using both.
Try everything on before the session day. Maternity clothes fit differently week to week. What fits at 28 weeks may not fit the same way at 32 weeks. Give yourself enough time to make adjustments if needed.
Think about undergarments. Seamless, skin-tone options that do not show lines or straps under lightweight fabric will save you in editing and in the moment.
Comfort is not optional. What to wear to a maternity photoshoot should be something you can spend an hour in without adjusting, pulling, or thinking about. If something feels off at home it will feel more off in front of the camera.
Figuring out what to wear to a maternity photoshoot does not have to feel overwhelming. With the right guidance and a little lead time, it becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of the process rather than the most stressful one.
As a Raleigh maternity photographer, I work with expecting families throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle area.
