When to take maternity photos matters more than most people realize, and I want to tell you a story that explains why.
She had nearly convinced herself not to come at all. She had mentioned in her planning emails that she was not really a photo person and that pregnancy had made her feel further from herself than she expected. She showed up quiet. Not unfriendly, just the kind of quiet that tells you someone is in their head.
We started slow. No rushing, no pressure, just getting comfortable in the space, talking about the baby, talking about nothing in particular. About twenty minutes in I turned the camera around and showed her a frame on the back of my screen. She went still for a second and then said something like “wait, is that actually me?” Not in a vain way. More like she genuinely didn’t recognize herself as the person in the image.
That was the moment everything shifted. Her shoulders dropped, the tension left her face, and she stopped holding herself back. She leaned into it. By the end she was laughing, asking to see every frame, and telling me she wished she had booked sooner. When her gallery was delivered she sent me a message saying she had almost talked herself out of this and that thought genuinely scared her now that she was holding the images.
That session is part of why I feel strongly about helping expecting moms understand not just why maternity photos are worth doing, but specifically when to take maternity photos so the timing works in their favor. Because the window matters more than most people realize, and missing it is easy to do.
When to take maternity photos is not a one-size-fits-all answer, but there is a window that tends to produce the most beautiful, comfortable, and flattering results. Shoot too early and the bump may not have the full, round presence that makes maternity portraits so striking. Wait too long and physical discomfort can make it hard to relax into the session the way you deserve to.
The best time to do maternity photos is also about how you feel. Pregnancy is not a linear experience. Some weeks feel wonderful and others feel impossible, and knowing the general window helps you plan around the stretch where most moms feel their most settled and their bump is at its most photogenic.
Understanding when to take maternity photos is one of the first things I walk every expecting client through, because getting the timing right sets the entire session up for success.

For most expecting moms, the best time to do maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. Here is why that window works so well.
When to take maternity photos can shift slightly depending on your body, your pregnancy, and how you are feeling in any given week. These are starting points, not rules. We will talk through all of it during your planning process.
The best time to do maternity photos for a twin or multiples pregnancy is earlier, typically between 26 and 30 weeks. Carrying more than one baby means the belly reaches its full, round presence sooner, and physical comfort tends to peak earlier in the pregnancy as well.
If you are expecting multiples and thinking about when to take maternity photos, I would encourage you to reach out as soon as possible. The window moves faster than it does with a singleton pregnancy, and holding your date early means you are not scrambling when the weeks go by quicker than expected.

One of the things I love about being based in Raleigh is that we have genuinely beautiful outdoor locations available year-round. But when families ask me about the best time to do maternity photos in terms of location, my honest recommendation leans toward the studio for most expecting moms.
Here is why. Raleigh weather in the summer is relentless, and scheduling an outdoor session when you are 30 weeks pregnant and it is 95 degrees outside is not a recipe for feeling your best. Spring and fall outdoor sessions are stunning, but they come with weather variables that are completely out of our control. A rainout when you have a narrow window for when to take maternity photos is genuinely stressful.
My private natural light studio gives you the look and feel of a soft, airy session without any of those variables. The light is consistent and beautiful regardless of what is happening outside, the temperature is controlled, and there is no time pressure built around golden hour. You can arrive, settle in, and let the session breathe.
That said, outdoor maternity sessions are absolutely something I offer and they can be incredible, especially in the spring and fall months. We will talk through both options during your planning process and figure out what fits your vision and your timeline best.
Outfit planning is one of the parts of maternity photography that stresses expecting moms out the most, and it does not need to. Here is what I tell every client thinking about when to take maternity photos and what to wear.
Flowy, fitted, and soft almost always wins. Dresses and gowns that drape over the bump and move beautifully on camera tend to produce the most timeless maternity portraits. Tight, structured pieces can work but require more care. Anything that makes you feel like yourself is always the right starting point.
I have a client maternity wardrobe available with a selection of flowy dresses in a range of styles and neutral tones. It is something I am actively building out, and we will talk through wardrobe options during your planning process so you arrive feeling prepared. You are also always welcome to bring your own pieces, and many clients do a combination of both.
The best time to do maternity photos also means thinking about your wardrobe in advance. Maternity clothes fit differently week to week, and giving yourself a little lead time to pull pieces together means one less thing to figure out when the session is right around the corner.

For a lot of the families I work with, figuring out when to take maternity photos is part of a bigger picture. Because booking maternity photography is often the first step in documenting the whole first year of your baby’s life.
My First Year Membership is designed exactly for this. It starts with your maternity session, moves into a newborn session in those first precious days, and continues through the milestone sessions including the cake smash at your baby’s first birthday. It is a way of making sure you do not miss any of it, and the maternity portraits become the opening chapter of the whole story.
If you are already thinking about when to take maternity photos and you know you also want newborn photos, reaching out now and talking through the membership is the move. It lets us get everything on the calendar in one conversation and takes the planning off your plate before the baby arrives and planning becomes the last thing you have energy for.
Knowing when to take maternity photos is the first step. Taking the step to actually book it is the one that matters.
Pregnancy moves fast, and the window for the best time to do maternity photos is shorter than it feels like it will be. The families who look back wishing they had done it almost always say the same thing: they assumed they would figure it out later, and later came faster than they expected.
If you are expecting and somewhere in your second or early third trimester, this is your nudge. Reach out, tell me your due date, and we will figure out the timing and the details together. You do not need a vision or a plan. Just a date and a willingness to show up.
As a Raleigh maternity photographer, I work with expecting families throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle area. From timing and location to wardrobe and the full planning process, I will guide you through every detail so you can walk into your session feeling prepared and actually excited.
I would love to photograph this chapter for you. Take a look at my Maternity Photography Experience page to learn more about what the process looks like, reach out here when you are ready to hold your date, and come find me on Instagram to see my most recent work.
