She sat there staring at it like it had personally offended her.
Little hands in her lap. Chin tucked. Completely unimpressed by the perfectly frosted smash cake sitting two inches from her face. Her parents were right behind me, whispering encouragements. I was blowing bubbles, making every ridiculous sound I know, and this girl was not having it.
Then, about twelve minutes in, something shifted. She reached out one finger and just barely grazed the frosting. Then both hands. Then she was in it up to her wrists, grinning like she’d discovered something the rest of us had been keeping from her for a full year. By the end of the session, she had frosting on her ears, her nose, and somehow her left knee. And when I set the cake aside to wrap things up, she burst into tears. Full, genuine heartbreak. Because the cake was gone.
That is a first birthday cake smash photoshoot. Not perfect, not choreographed, and absolutely worth every single frame.
A first birthday cake smash photoshoot is exactly what it sounds like: a dedicated session celebrating your baby’s first trip around the sun, complete with a cake made specifically to be destroyed. It’s part portrait session, part milestone celebration, and part delightful chaos.
But first birthday cake smash photos aren’t just about the mess. They’re about capturing who your baby is at this exact moment. The way they approach something new. The face they make when sugar hits for the first time. The full-body joy that takes over once they realize there are zero rules about this particular cake.
At Lindsey Lambert Photography, every first birthday cake smash photoshoot starts with clean portraits before we ever introduce the cake. We get the sweet, calm, dressed-up images first, and then we let things get messy. It’s the best of both worlds, and it means your gallery tells the full story of the day.

Here’s how a typical first birthday cake smash photoshoot flows from start to finish:
Cleanup made easy. After the session, you have access to a private restroom right in the studio to rinse off your baby before the drive home. I also send a detailed prep guide ahead of time so you know exactly what to bring and what to expect.
Clean portraits first. We begin with your baby dressed and happy before the frosting takes over. These images are soft, classic, and timeless.
Cake introduction. I provide the smash cake included in your session, so one less thing on your plate. If you have a specific vision, theme, or baker you love, you’re also welcome to bring your own and we’ll work those details out together ahead of time.
No pressure, no rushing. Some babies go straight for the cake. Others, like my little frosting skeptic above, need some time. I never push or force the moment. I give babies space to explore, play their favorite music, blow bubbles, break out my favorite squeaky toys, sing whatever nursery rhyme seems to be landing. The in-between moments, where they’re touching the cake like it might talk back, are often my absolute favorites to photograph.
Family is always welcome. Siblings, parents, grandparents, all of them. First birthday cake smash photos with the whole family in the frame are something you’ll look back on for decades.
When families start planning a first birthday cake smash photoshoot, the temptation is to go all in on decorations, themed props, and coordinated setups. And I get it. This is a big deal. But here’s what I’ve found after photographing lots of one-year-olds: the more visual noise in the frame, the less you see your baby.
My approach to first birthday cake smash photos is intentionally minimal. Simple backdrops, clean setups, focus on the child. Not because I’m not willing to go elaborate, but because simplicity is what makes these images timeless. You’ll still love them in ten years because they look like your kid, not like a Pinterest trend from 2025.
The cake sits on a simple surface. The setup is clean and uncluttered. And then your baby does what babies do, and that becomes the entire image. It works every single time.

Most of my first birthday cake smash photoshoot clients are part of The First Year Membership, a program designed to document your baby’s full first year across multiple milestone sessions. The cake smash is the grand finale. If you’ve been a membership client from early on, your first birthday cake smash photos are already built into your experience.
That said, if you’re looking for a standalone session and didn’t do a membership, I’m happy to talk through options. One-off first birthday cake smash photoshoots are something I love doing, and I’d rather you reach out and ask than miss the milestone altogether.
Sessions are based in my natural light studio in Raleigh, which gives us a consistent, beautiful setting year-round regardless of the weather outside. If you’re in the Raleigh area or anywhere in the Triangle, including Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Wake Forest, or Durham, I’d love to celebrate your baby’s first birthday with you.
The short answer: earlier than you think.
First birthdays have a way of sneaking up on families. You blink and your newborn is pulling up on the furniture and side-eyeing their very first smash cake. By the time most families start thinking about booking a first birthday cake smash photoshoot, dates are already filling up.
I recommend reaching out one to two months before your baby’s first birthday to hold your date. Sessions are scheduled close to the actual birthday so your first birthday cake smash photos capture your baby right at that one-year mark, not a few months after when the moment has passed.
If you’re currently in the newborn or early milestone stage, keep first birthday cake smash photos on your radar now. It’s never too early to ask about availability.

A first birthday only happens once. The frosting in the ears, the shocked expression when sugar hits for the first time, the full-body joy of a baby who has figured out that this cake situation is actually incredible. First birthday cake smash photos are one of my favorite sessions to shoot because nothing about them is scripted, and everything about them is real.
You don’t need a theme, a vision, or a Pinterest board. You just need a date on the calendar before the birthday sneaks up on you. Reach out now while you still have the space to think about it, because first birthdays go from three months away to next week faster than feels possible, and the dates families want are usually the first ones to go.
If your baby’s first birthday is anywhere on the horizon, that instinct you’re feeling right now is worth listening to. Check my availability and let’s get your date held. And if you want to see what these sessions actually look and feel like, my most recent work is always on Instagram.
Do you provide the cake or do I need to bring one? The cake is included and taken care of on my end, so one less thing on your plate. That said, if you have a specific baker you love or a flavor your baby has already tried, you’re welcome to bring your own. We’ll work those details out together during the planning process ahead of time.
What if my baby wants nothing to do with the cake? It happens more than you’d think, and honestly some of my favorite first birthday cake smash photos have come from babies who started out completely unimpressed. I never push or force the moment. I give every baby space to explore at their own pace, play their favorite music, break out the bubbles and squeaky toys, and let things unfold naturally. The in-between moments, where they’re eyeing the cake like it might be a trap, are often the best frames in the whole gallery.
Can siblings and family be part of the session? Always. Parents, siblings, grandparents, everyone is welcome. First birthday cake smash photos with the whole family in the frame are something people look back on for a long time.
Do I need a theme or a specific vision? Not at all. My setups are intentionally simple and clean so the focus stays on your baby, not the decor. You don’t need a color palette, a theme, or any kind of plan. Show up with your one-year-old and I’ll handle everything else.
How do I handle the mess after the session? I send a detailed prep guide ahead of time that covers exactly what to bring and what to expect. The studio has a private restroom so you can rinse your baby off before the drive home, which parents are always relieved to have.
Is this a standalone session or part of something bigger? Most of my cake smash clients are part of The First Year Membership, which documents your baby’s full first year across multiple milestone sessions with the cake smash as the grand finale. If you’re interested in just a standalone first birthday cake smash photoshoot, I’m happy to talk through that option too. Either way, reach out and we’ll figure out the best fit for your family.
How far in advance should I book? Earlier than you think. I recommend reaching out one to two months before your baby’s first birthday to hold your date. First birthdays have a way of sneaking up fast, and the dates families want are usually the first ones to fill up.
