If you’ve ever opened your closet two days before a family session and thought, “Why does nothing go together?”. You’re not alone. I’ve had families roll up in four completely different color stories, and I’ve had others show up perfectly coordinated but soaked in sweat before we even started shooting.
That last scenario is what really changed how I talk to families about summer family photo outfits. Last July, a sweet family of five met me for a golden hour session at a local Raleigh park. It was 96 degrees. Within fifteen minutes, the littlest one’s hair was plastered to her face, dad’s collar was showing sweat patches, and mom was fanning herself between every frame. The images were still beautiful, but it didn’t have to be that hard. That day, I committed to helping my families think through not just what to wear, but when and where to shoot so everything works with the season instead of against it.
Here’s your complete guide to summer family photo outfits — Raleigh style.

Raleigh summers are no joke. From June through September, we’re regularly hitting the upper 80s and low 90s with humidity that makes it feel worse. Getting your summer family photo outfits right starts with understanding the climate you’re working with. Fabrics that photograph beautifully in fall, like chunky knits, layered flannels, and heavier linens, become your enemy in July. When planning summer family photo outfits, you’re balancing three things at once: what looks great on camera, what keeps everyone comfortable, and what holds up after fifteen minutes in the Carolina heat.
That’s a narrower target than most families expect, but it’s absolutely achievable once you know what to look for.
Here’s something most Raleigh families don’t realize: even a 7:30 PM golden hour session in July still means 85 degrees, full humidity, and bugs that have punched in for their evening shift. I still offer outdoor sessions, and they’re gorgeous, but summer is when I genuinely encourage families to consider two alternatives.
My private, natural lighting studio is my top recommendation for summer family photo outfits sessions. You get the look of a bright, airy outdoor shoot without a single bead of sweat. The light is consistent and flattering at any time of day, kids aren’t squinting or bolting after fireflies, and your carefully planned summer family photo outfits stay looking fresh from the first frame to the last.
In-home sessions are my other summer favorite. Your house is already a place where your family can relax and be themselves. Plus, the air conditioning is a gift during those hot summer months. The documentary, lived-in feel of an in-home session pairs especially well with casual summer family photo outfits: bare feet, soft textures, kids piled on the couch. That kind of ease is genuinely hard to fake outdoors.

Here’s the approach I walk every family through when planning their summer family photo outfits: start with one piece, and let everything else respond to it.
Pick the anchor piece first — usually Mom’s outfit or the most visually interesting piece in the group. A floral midi dress, a dusty sage linen set, a patterned romper. Whatever it is, it sets the palette and the vibe for the whole family.
Pull two or three colors from that piece and assign them to everyone else. Don’t try to match exactly. That tends to look stiff and dated. If the anchor dress has soft terracotta, cream, and muted olive, you now have a complete color story to work with.
Vary the textures and silhouettes even within the same palette. A cream linen button-down on dad reads completely differently than a cream smocked dress on your toddler. That variation is what makes a group of people look intentional rather than costumed.

For Mom: Linen and lightweight cotton are the foundations of great summer family photo outfits. A flowy midi dress in sage, dusty blue, warm terracotta, or ivory photographs beautifully and stays breathable. Avoid sheen or shimmer because it can reflect light oddly on camera. Wrap dresses and smocked styles are forgiving on every body type.
For Dad: Linen pants or chinos with a cotton or linen button-down is the gold standard for guys in summer family photo outfits. Untucked reads as casual summer family photo outfit energy; tucked in reads a little more elevated. Skip logos, graphic tees, and athletic fabrics because they draw the eye away from faces and can make photos feel dated more quickly.
For Kids: Smocked dresses, linen rompers, and lightweight cotton short sets all translate beautifully into casual summer family photo outfits for little ones. Coordinate with the family palette but don’t stress about perfect matching. A little variation in the kids’ pieces adds visual life to the final images.
Colors that work: When choosing summer family photo outfits, muted, earthy tones tend to photograph best. Colors like sage green, dusty blue, warm terracotta, ivory, soft peach, mauve, and muted navy create a timeless look that works beautifully in photographs. Avoid neons, bright white (ivory is usually a safer choice), and black, which absorbs heat and can make everyone feel warmer during the session.
Need a starting point? One of my favorite summer family photo outfit combinations is a soft ivory dress for mom, a light blue button-down for dad, a sage green dress for one child, and neutral khaki or cream bottoms for the other. The colors coordinate without matching exactly, and they photograph beautifully against Raleigh’s summer greenery.

Even the most thoughtfully planned summer family photo outfits can get derailed by a few common mistakes. Here’s what to leave at home.
Matching sets. Everyone in the same exact outfit looks more like a catalogue than a family. Coordinate, don’t match.
Too many patterns. One bold pattern as an accent is lovely. Four competing patterns is visual chaos. One pattern, everyone else in solids.
Last-minute online orders. New clothes often fit differently in person than they appear online. Wear pieces you already love and feel confident in because that comfort shows up on camera.
Planning summer family photo outfits doesn’t have to be stressful. The best outfits are the ones that feel comfortable, photograph beautifully, and reflect your family’s personality. Whether you’re drawn to soft neutrals, light summer colors, flowing dresses, or a more casual and relaxed look, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a cohesive look that allows the focus to stay on the connection between the people in the photographs.
One thing many families are surprised to learn is that summer sessions don’t have to mean standing outside in the heat. Whether you envision a relaxed session in your home, portraits in my natural light studio, an outdoor golden-hour session, or another meaningful location, we’ll choose a setting that fits your family and helps everyone feel comfortable.
As a Raleigh family photographer, I help families throughout Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, and the surrounding Triangle area plan every detail of their session, including outfit selection. From choosing colors and coordinating outfits to selecting the perfect location, I’ll guide you through the process so you can feel confident and prepared before your session day arrives.
If you’re ready to create beautiful family memories this summer, I’d love to help. Together we’ll plan the location, timing, and summer family photo outfits that fit your family’s style and make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera.
